Episode #4 - Live in Shelbyville - The Strand Theatre

We had a good ole time, made some new friends, and ate some great food. The Strand Theatre is definately a venue you want to catch your favorite band. We talk to Scott Shrader from Sub*Mission, John Wayne Pastor and his new album “New Retro”. Jethro Easyfields talks about his new project “Elixir” and Mike Mossey who is currently working on a documentary about Sean Wilhoite. Listen to me slaughter one intro after the other and one of these days I’ll learn to read. I hear it’s a good skill to have. The only downer of the evening was they couldn’t fit our band name on the billboard. It takes a lot of letters to make “Crabtree’s Trunk Featuring The Rhinestones”. I suppose our full band name was completely out of the question “Crabtree’s Trunk Featuring The Rhinestones with The Morman Tabernacle Choir and special guest Duke Scott Kern of the Bone Crusher Clan and He Who Cannot Be Named”.

Episode #3 - Odamfest Extravaganze

It was a great time had by all at the Odom’s. We play some live recordings of the bands that performed. We touch on such things as the life and death of Captain Band and why you should care, Johnny Ping’s sweatshirt admirer, drinking really bad beer (really bad), Mansuper’s fashion sense, Tim’s new career of 1970’s album art creation, Jerry Reed dying, really terrible British bands (that’s a bottomless topic), and all the other festivities.

Episode 1 - The Revolution and Spencer’s Stadium Tavern

Episode 1: In the Beginning

This is the first official trunk podcast and so I thought I would take a moment to talk about the members before getting down to it. So hear is the breakdown, in alphabetical order.

Scott Crabtree

e a.k.a Cootie, And thatappeared on the local Indianapolis music scene back around the turn of the century. Its not clear his exact origins. Its been said his car broke down in Indiana on his way up to Maine from Montana and he’s just trying to earn enough cash to fix it. There is also talk of him laying cross ties on the Trans Canadian RailRoad before riding a train down to the States. Either way, where you been is good and gone, all you keep is the getting there.

Profoundly influenced musically by Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle, Jerry Garcia, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, The Allman Brothers And John Prine, just to name a few. Cootie has worked closely and collaborated with local songwriters Johnny Ping, Jethro Easyfields, Owen Neighbours & Scott Kern. Bands on his resume include Folkoff, Oddeo, Old Peculiar & Crabtree’s Trunk featuring The Rhinestones, which is his current project. It is not an easy task to label the genre of The Trunk, the music walks a thin line between Americana, Alt-Cuntry, Rootsy - Grass - Blues & Rock n’ Roll, and that is fine with him… a pigeon hole aint no place to be anyways.

Andrew Funke - (Bass/Vocals) Andrew has been playing bass for roughly 15 years, the past ten of them professionally. Whether working as an integral member of a band or as a backing/session musician, he’s played genres ranging from indie rock, to blues, to country, and just about all points inbetween. Andrew has worked extensively in the Indianapolis and Bloomington, Indiana, areas, but his work has also taken him to Chicago, Los Angeles, and Sweden.

Joseph Hodson - (Guitar/Vocals/Mandolin/Keys)
Biography:Joe has been playing the guitar for 16 years. While his early influences were rooted in the blues, he has since studied contemporary hard rock, jazz, classical, folk and country guitar while becoming proficient in all of these styles. He has also been in numerous bands playing a wide variety of music under a wide variety of circumstances, from acoustic coffee house shows to festivals in front of thousands of people. “I believe that a lead guitarist is not in a band just to play guitar solos, but to provide texture, dynamics, counter melodies, and richness to the song” - Joe Hodson

Scott Kern - (Guitar/Banjo/Vocals) It’s a fact that Scott was born in the early 1800’s. He was sent here to Earth to conquer it’s inhabitants and become supreme ruler. Failing to do that, he learned how to play guitar and chop wood, although he sometimes gets the two mixed up. It is also a fact that color photography wasn’t invented until well into the 20th century, so we are honored to have this very rare photograph of the guitar picker at work. Always the innovator, Scott has played in many bands around the Indianapolis area and is a Hoosier thru and thru. Scott performs on guitar, banjo, and vocals in the group and loves every minute. You can usually find Scott at any open stage or Bluegrass pickn’ circle. Just look for the guy with a guitar that looks like it’s been hit with an axe.

Tim Plunkett - Tim has been on the music scene for over a decade and a half. He has built a reputation as a great studio/live musician, as well as an Engineer and Producer. With his stylish musicianship and dynamic personality, he can capture the attention of any audience, on stage or in the studio, enchant them, and lift their spirits and consciousness at the same time. Though he is a multi-instrumentalist, he is most noted for his diverse and inspiring percussive and production abilities.

A little info on the whole band: As an eclectic inspirational rockabilly vibe, it is hard to put Crabtree’s Trunk in any sort of category. Their sounds are vast and touch such inspirations as Johnny Cash, Blues Traveler, The Grateful Dead, and The Allman Brothers. All of the members of this band write the music, and write themselves in each and every song they perform.

Okay on to the show. This time it was Spencer’s Stadium Tavern located near Lucas Oil Stadium. I wonder where they got name? Spencer’s is a tight fit for a full band but the bar staff and the patrons are awesome and they really have a great atmosphere there. Cliff Snyder was the opener. Cliff is a singer/songwriter and also runs the Indianapolis Songwriters Café. Be sure to check out his website. If you look at the site you can tell Cliff has put a lot of work into it. And, if you dig a little deeper notice how much content he has added to it as well. I don’t know how he finds time to write his own songs or gig. Speaking of singer songwriters, we had several local artists show up and with that many pickers in the group we had to get a few of them up on stage to play. Some troubadours of note were Pete Justice and Johnny Ping. Both Pete and Johnny have been involved with the local music scene and both are prolific song writers.

Cliff was performing solo this night and he started it off with a great blues tune. Then we played. He works he’s butt off to promote local music in Indianapolis. He is also the person behind Indianapolis Songwriters Cafe. A great group of songwriters that get together and share songs and have a good ole time.

Johnny Ping got up and jumped in with us and so did Pete Justice. All in all it was a good show and we got to meet some awesome artists.

Revolution, Music, and Peace Festival

Hippies, Hippies, Hippies! It was right out of the 60’s with a modern twist. We were performing at the Revolution, Music, and Peace Festival. A music festival to benefit breast cancer. All proceeds going to benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation at St. Vincent Hospital. The location was a remote hill top in Southern Indiana that you could only find by following a trail of pink ribbons tied along the lonesome gravel back roads that criss cross the hillside. The pink ribbons were a nice touch in keeping with the breast cancer theme and was absolutely necessary to keep travelers from going down the wrong road and having to get directions from the locals.

Elephant Revival

Cootie was walking around the field plinking on his guitar when we pulled up and Joe, Tim and Andrew arrived shortly there after. We all had fun snapping photos and playing with a batman doll that one of Cootie’s kids left in the back of his car. It was probably the most awesome batman experience I’ve had as of late. Elephant Revival went on just before us and they are really good. Be sure to check out there myspace. We started setting up and met the surly sound guy, who will be part of my “soundguy rant” one of these days. We played our set. Cootie did a Grateful Dead cover, “New Speedway Boogie” which was a nice addition. The set list was:

In usual Trunk fashion this was changed up on site and we added and took away a few songs. My memory is a haze as to what all actually was played. I think we confused them a bit at the end. We ended the last song by walking off the stage one by one and leaving or amps feeding back until only Tim and Andrew are left to end the song.

All in all, it was a fun gig to do and a great experience to remember. And I have to say hippie chicks are hot! A few hours after we left, I heard that the police came in and shut the event down. Damn the man and his corporate plan, right? We didn’t make any recording of this performance but I will have some more up soon at the site.
